"The Read" I sat down with Motordrome and a box of Girl Scout cookies on a rainy Sunday night. I couldn’t have chosen a better accompaniment to my thin mints than this idealistic turn of the century motorcycle tale. The story quickly took me back to a time when “heroic” meant passionately believing in dreams and following them to fruition–despite the risk or danger. An era when men were men: strong, skillful, daring and confident.

WHYATT, the story’s lead racer is a solid, purposeful twenty two year old who would rather write in his journal than whoop it up with teammates. He’s the kind of guy who falls in love at first site and actually follows through on it. ISABELLA is the exotic Spanish beauty Wyatt marries after only two months of dating. BILL is Whyatt’s studly, hotheaded brother who parties even harder than he races. Except for the dedication each has for their sport, the sibs couldn’t be more different.

First generation sports heroes compete to stay alive while slimy businessmen race to stuff their pockets before being shut down. Sipping from my glass of milk, I considered how little things really change over time. Someone pursues a dream and someone else tries to exploit it. Fast-paced racing scenes bombard the senses with triumph and disaster. Motordrome or murderdrome? Either way, my trip to yester-year was well worth the calories.
